Learning Objectives

After reading this article, you:

  • Implement IP whitelisting for your Workplace Management environment.

...

General

By default, a user can log in with any IP address. Using IP whitelisting and blacklisting

...

is a simple way to ensure

...

only trusted users can

...

access Workplace. Typically, the IP addresses of the clients company’s network are added and those of the implementation consultants/support. After configuring this, logging in is only allowed from the configured IP addresses.

...

Steps to configure

...

  1. Click on the

...

  1. ‘Client settings’ tile on the admin startBoard;

  2. Open the ‘Authentication’ tab

...

  1. Scroll down to the ‘IP address white or black-listing

...

  1. tab;

  2. Click on

...

  1. ‘New.’ to create a new IP connection.

  2. The fields “IP address “ and “Access” are mandatory. The other fields are optional.

Deleting an IP connection

A IP connection can be deleted again by: opening it and clicking on the delete symbol on the top right of the page.

Note

Be aware: after whitelisting (access = yes) one IP connection, ALL other IP addresses are blocked directly. This will be the case once one IP connection will be set to ‘Access = yes’. It is therefore also not functionally possible to use both (both access = yes and no in IP connections in the same tenant, as only with listed (access = yes) IP addresses will be accepted if one IP connection exists with 'Access = yes'.

Setting

Description

IP address

Specify the IP address here. IP ranges are also allowed by using a '*'. For example: 93.14.233.* grants/ blocks access for 93.14.233.01, 93.14.233..02, 93.14.233.89, etc.

Access

...

Access = yes > whitelisting
Access = no > blacklisting

From/ To

Fill in when the access restriction applies for a specific time

...

period

Description

Description of the IP address.

Operation mode

You can allow or block access for specific servers. When left empty, the white-/blacklisting applies to all servers. Leaving the setting empty is

...

standard practice. Available servers are

...

production, backup, test, and development.

User

Specify a user for whom the connection settings are applied. This can, for example, be used to grant a key user access to

...

the system from a home network.

Note

Important: when enabling IP whitelisting, please first

...

consult your Workplace consultant. The IP address of your Workplace consultant’s office location needs to be whitelisted. Otherwise, the Workplace consultant and

...

our Customer Support department will

...

be unable to log in to the client environment in case of bugs, questions, and changes.

Deleting an IP connection

An IP connection can be deleted again by opening it and clicking the delete symbol on the top right of the page.

Access denied login error

When a user tries to

...

log in from an IP address that is not whitelisted or is blacklisted, they will get an “Access denied“ error after a login attempt.
