Learning Objectives

After reading this article, you’ll be able to:

  • Prepare your environment to start using Kerlink

  • Configure a Kerlink using 4G

  • Troubleshoot Kerlink devices

What is Kerlink iFemtocell Evolution?

Kerlink is a LoRa gateway that can be used for any Spacewell LoRa device to connect to the Workplace Platform.

Hardware & Network Requirements

Kerlink iFemtocell Evolution can connect to your network through ethernet or over 4G.

If you’re working with 4G, you’ll need to foresee a SIM card for this device: it depends on how many sensors will connect to the gateway, but overall / on average we assume 250MB of monthly data transfer, so we suggest to take a SIM card for 1GB.

If you’re connecting the gateway to your network using ethernet cable:

  • Open ports 80, 123, 443, 1700 in the firewall. These ports only need an outbound connection.

  • On the network, the devices must have HTTPS & MQTT/TLS access via different ports. Please find below the current “List of IP addresses for outgoing traffic” to know which ports to open.

  • A Dynamic IP is required.

titleIP Addresses needed for Outgoing traffic

We sync all our hubs to the same open NTP (network time protocol) servers so we have consistent timings in our data warehouse.

Note

We recommend not to use specific IP addresses or DNS destinations in the firewall as they can and probably will change in the future!

→ The ports will remain the same, so we recommend to communicate / open the ports outbound.

Hub Configuration (only needed for 4G)

Prerequisites

Requirements to the computer that you will use for the configuration:

  • physical network input for ethernet cable (on mac we suggest to use an adapter)

  • securities can be setup in so many different ways, it’s not possible to describe system requirements… The customer company should either provide a laptop that can connect to the outside world and/or whitelist the kerlink page.

  • make sure your computer is connecting to the same network as the device

  • place the sim card in the device. You will hear the sim click into place / inserted ("tick") sound.

Activation Steps

1. Make sure you're connected to the device with an ethernet cable.

2. Depending on the gateway model, you have to visit another URL (XXXXXX = last 6 digits of EUI on the back of the gateway). For Kerlink iFemtocell Evolution, visit http://klk-fevo-XXXXXX

Get your login from the Spacewell hardware manager.

3. In order to set up 4G, select "Administration" in the left hand menu:

  • Enable mobile network

  • Enter PIN code

  • Add Operator details

4. Look up MCC/MNC and APN values

  • MCC and MNC values are available here: http://mcc-mnc.com/

  • Google the APN values from your carrier (address, username, password). Without complete APN data, the hub will not have a 4G connection.

This example is Swedish carrier tele2:

For Proximus, use MCC 206, MNC 01, APN “internet.proximus.be”; no need to fill in user name or password

Make sure to SAVE your cell phone config changes.

Info

If the SIM configuration was not correct or saved, the toggle will jump to GSM disabled.

5. Reboot the gateway and unplug the network cable for the configuration changes to take effect.

6. The Spacewell Implementation Consultant can check on /wiki/spaces/KB/pages/492072 that the gateway is online (EUI in format 7076FF0064xxxxxx can be found on the sticker at the back of the device).

Hub Installation

  • If on 4G, connect the hub with the power cord to a plug

  • If using the ethernet functionality, make sure the ethernet cable is connecting to the network on which the required ports are opened (see above). On the device itself, there is only 1 ethernet port available on the hub, so it's easy to place the Ethernet cable.

Connection check

In order to check the connection of the hub on on /wiki/spaces/KB/pages/492072, please communicate the EUI (format 7076FF006404027E), that can be found on the sticker at the back of the device, to your Spacewell consultant.

If your connection was successful:

  • the LEDs on the device will be

    • 1st LED will be solid green = power status = connected to power

    • 2nd LED = can be ignored

    • 3rd LED = blinking green = LORA activity/connected (sending packages to LORA) (blinking will be higher in frequency once sensors installed)

→ To see if a hub is live ON the device, is only possible if all sensors are installed (operational mode), because then the 3rd blinking LED will be blinking more continuously

  • the indicator on the TTN platform will be solid BLUE which means that the gateway is connected to the LoRaWAN network and is ready to handle packets (Spacewell Workplace SPOC is able to check this based on the Board ID)

Troubleshooting

General

  1. Check the LED lights

  2. Make sure there are not typos in the hub board ID (ask customer to take a picture of the sticker at the back of the device)

  3. Check if the hub is connected to the correct network (on the switch)

  4. Are you sure the SIM card is activated with the network provider? (ideally test the sim card in another device)

  5. Check operator details are correct in the configuration

  6. Replace a non-working hub with one that is confirmed working

  7. If, after above checks, the device is still not connecting to the /wiki/spaces/KB/pages/492072, you will want to consider to do a Factory Reset. Please follow the steps below.

How to do a Factory reset?

  1. Connect the Kerlink to your laptop with an ethernet cable

  2. Open Kerlink platform (Depending on the gateway model, you have to visit another URL; see above)

  3. In tab Gateway, select action Factory Reset by applying button "reset gateway". Confirm the action in the pop-up. You’ll see a progress bar at the top of your screen.

  4. The button "reset gateway" in underneath Factory Reset now changed in "reboot gateway": select and confirm the action in the pop-up.

What to do after a Factory reset?

  1. Connect the Kerlink to your laptop with an ethernet cable

  2. Open the network settings of your computer (right click on wifi icon)

    1. Go to "change adapter options"

    2. Right click on "WIFI" > select "Properties"

    3. Select tab "Share" and tick the first box (other network users can use your wifi connection)

    4. Specify which internet port/ethernet port you want to share the wifi network to

    5. WiFi properties should look like this now:

  3. Open Kerlink platform (Depending on the gateway model, you have to visit another URL; see above); there you can see the IP address

    1. if you changed the password in the mean time, remember that the factory reset also does a password reset

  4. If you don't have Putty yet, make sure to install Putty from https://www.putty.org/

  5. In Putty: copy paste the IP address that is mentioned on the Kerlink Platform under “Application”. Best practice is to use port 22

  6. Confirm you want to access the device (a black screen like in the screenshot below will open)

  7. Enter "root"

  8. Enter password that you get from the Workplace SPOC (this includes the last 6 digits from the Board ID that are written on the device; this password is case sensitive)

    1. in Putty, passwords are not shown, so the cursor will not move while you type

  9. Enter "klk_apps_config --activate-cpf --lns-server spacewell.eu1.cloud.thethings.industries --lns-dport 1700 --lns-uport 1700" (copy paste does not work; but right click in putty acts like paste)

  10. Enter "reboot" in Putty for the actions to be committed. The Gateway will restart.

  11. Make sure to disable sharing your network in your computer's network settings after your work is done

12. Remember that you have now truly “factory” reset your device, so any configuration that you had done before, you will need to repeat (see “Hub Configuration > Activation steps)

When you do Factory Reset on multiple devices, you might want to use this workflow

  1. Open the network settings of your computer (right click on wifi icon) and specify which internet port/ethernet port you want to share the wifi network to, as described above. You do this once.

  2. Perform factory reset + follow the steps after factory reset (3-10) + follow activation steps on all the devices

  3. At the very end, when you have configured the last device: Make sure to disable sharing your network in your computer's network settings after your work is done

What to do if neither device nor shipment box give the correct device EUI?

  1. Connect the Kerlink to your laptop with an ethernet cable

  2. Open the network settings of your computer (right click on wifi icon)

  3. Go to "change adapter options"

    1. Right click on "WIFI" > select "Properties"

    2. Select tab "Share" and tick the first box (other network users can use your wifi connection)

    3. Specify which internet port/ethernet port you want to share the wifi network to

  4. Open Kerlink platform (Depending on the gateway model, you have to visit another URL; see above); there you can see the IP address

  5. f you don't have Putty yet, make sure to install Putty from https://www.putty.org/

  6. In Putty: copy paste the IP address that is mentioned on the Kerlink Platform under “Application”. Best practice is to use port 22

  7. Confirm you want to access the device (a black screen like in the screenshot below will open)

  8. Enter "root"

  9. Enter password that you get from the Spacewell Workplace SPOC (XXXX being the last 6 digits from the Board ID that are written on the device; this password is case sensitive)

  10. Enter "cat /tmp/sys_startup_status.json" in Putty to find the correct Device EUI (copy paste does not work; but right click in putty acts like paste)

  11. Enter "reboot" in putty for the actions to be committed. The Gateway will restart.

  12. Make sure to disable sharing your network in your computer's network settings after your work is done
