After reading this article, you’ll be able to:

  • Check prerequisites for VergeSense gateway

  • Install VergeSense gateway

What is a VergeSense Gateway?

VergeSense sensors connect to their own proprietary hub, which will be delivered with your hardware shipment. VergeSense recommends 1 gateway per 50 sensors.

Vergesense gateways can be cellular (connecting to the Vergesense platform over a 4G sim card), or can connect to your network via ethernet or WiFi.

Prerequisites

In the sensor plan, VergeSense will make a suggestion of where to place the gateway (see VergeSense installation location). They should be installed above human height; ideally up on the ceiling.

Be sure to prepare cabling and possibly network configurations based on VergeSense hardware and network requirements.

Supported WiFi Frequency range for the G400 gateway: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz

When using the WiFi gateway, ideally SSID and login data (login and password) of the WiFi network need to be communicated to VergeSense and will be configured to the device PRIOR to shipment.

However, it is possible to enter WiFi credentials on the G400 once the device is on site:

  1. Provide SSID and password to your WiFi network to Spacewell / VergeSense

  2. VergeSense will create a file containing the credentials

  3. This file needs to be loaded onto a USB-C drive which can be plugged into the gateway to apply the credentials.

Connectivity

  • VergeSense G400 gateway can operate with ethernet connection or WiFi

    • WiFi: see chapter Prerequisites for more information on WiFi connectivity

    • LAN:

      • 1. Plug in the ethernet cable from the splitter to the gateway adapter (plug “IN”)

      • 2. Plug in the provided ethernet cable from the gateway adapter (“OUT”) to the gateway

  • VergeSense Cascade-500-W 4G gateway can operate with the pre-installed eSIM/ SIM card (needs power). The SIM card will be provided by VergeSense.

It’s possible to check on-site connectivity prior to installation date. Connect the gateway to power, and possible PoE, and inform your Spacewell Implementation consultant, who will in turn request VergeSense to check the connectivity.

Installation

Make sure to install the gateway and confirm its connectivity before sensor activation.

Where to place your gateway?

On the Sensor plan, VergeSense will make a suggestion for the VergeSense installation location. Depending on on-site availability of PoE or access, installation location might differ slightly. Please inform VergeSense if this is the case.

‪Place the Gateway somewhere in the center of the area you want to cover.

Place and set up up to 50 VergeSense sensor devices clustered around the gateway. The sensors will automatically set up a mesh network to connect to the gateway and each other.

The maximum distance between the gateway and the nearest installed sensor should be no more than 10 meters.

The gateway can be installed both horizontally or vertically.

‪Ideal placement for the gateway is above human height: best is up or against the ceiling.

In the example to the right, the only available PoE cable was close to the floor, so in the end the gateway was stuck to a large screen to still be above human height.

Start up your gateway

  • Vergesense Cascade-500 IoT gateway can operate with ethernet connection of on WiFi. If Power-over-ethernet is available, it can work only on PoE cable.

  • VergeSense Cascade-500-W 4G gateway can operate with the pre-installed eSIM/ SIM card (needs power). An eSIM/SIM card is pre-inserted with this model.

VergeSense Cascade-500-W 4G gateway antenna installation

Antennae should be hand tightened. They should be mounted facing up and angled away from metal for optimal cellular signal strength

Special consideration should be given to any metal near the mounting area, such as in support beams or HVAC ducts. Mount away from shelves, cabinets, HVAC ducts, and other obstacles

For optimal range, it is best to install gateway facing towards coverage area. Maintain a clear line of sight or minimize obstacles to desired coverage areas. Mounting above 6’ (2m) is recommended.

VergeSense Cascade-500-W 4G gateway SIM card installation
  1. Turn over the gateway, so the bottom side (showing the device technical specs) is facing up

  2. Insert SIM Card into slot, oriented such that you can see the chip as you insert it into the gateway

Once you connect the device to power, wait for about 2 minutes for the light to turn green.

See https://spacewell.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/143818753/VergeSense+troubleshooting#Gateway-LED-Indicators for more information about different LED colors and the status of the gateway.

Set up your gateway

Cascade-500-W 4G gateway

  1. ‪Locate the gateway device ID at the front of your device, or on the box

  2. Once the LED is green, provide the device ID to your Spacewell Implementation Consultant, who will configure the gateway on the https://spacewell.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/492301/VergeSense+Platform+SW+internal#Deploy-gateways-in-VergeSense-Platform to check connectivity.

G400 gateway

  1. ‪Locate the gateway device ID at the front of your device, or on the box

  2. Once the LED is no longer blinking, provide the device ID to your Spacewell Implementation Consultant, who will configure the gateway on the https://spacewell.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/492301/VergeSense+Platform+SW+internal#Deploy-gateways-in-VergeSense-Platform to check connectivity.

Next Steps

After gateway connectivity confirmation, follow steps in VergeSense sensor installation.

Troubleshooting

If you have a Cascade-500-W 4G gateway and the light does not turn green, and you’re using a PoE cable, make sure there is no issue with the cable nor the switch.

If the Gateway is offline and you were using WiFi or LAN configuration, check if any changes were made on the network. In case of WiFi configuration on Cascade-500 IoT gateway, see https://spacewell.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KB/pages/492287/VergeSense+gateway+installation#Archive

Archive

Prior to Q3 2024, VergeSense used to ship Cascade-500 IoT gateway.

Supported WiFi Frequency range for the Cascade-500 IoT gateway:

  • 2.412GHz - 2.472GHz

  • 5.180GHz – 5.700 GHz (region dependent)

When using the Cascade-500 IoT WiFi gateway, SSID and login data (login and password) of the WiFi network needed to be communicated and will be hard coded to the device PRIOR to shipment.

After communication of SSID & login data to VergeSense, there should be no more changes to the WiFi network, else the gateway will not be able to connect.

In case WiFi SSID changes are foreseen, inform Spacewell (who will inform VergeSense) to push these new credentials to the devices while they are still connected to the VergeSense platform.
