VergeSense hardware and network requirements

VergeSense hardware and network requirements

Difficulty: expert

Learning Objectives

After reading this article, you’ll be able to:

  • Set up your IT network as needed for Vergesense installation

Hardware Requirements

Vergesense gateways

Vergesense gateways can be cellular (connecting to the Vergesense platform over a 4G sim card), or can connect to your network.

  • Cellular / 4G gateway needs: DC power (standard 120-volt power outlet) or PoE (Power over Ethernet)

  • Ethernet / WiFi gateway (connecting to the network) needs:

    • ethernet option: PoE (Power over Ethernet)

    • WiFi option: DC power (standard 120-volt power outlet) or PoE (Power over Ethernet)

Vergesense gateways should be installed above human height, so foresee the required cabling either on the ceiling or high up a wall. A VergeSense installation location suggestion will be provided before installation.

Vergesense Sensor

Vergesense Sensors are wireless, so they are super easy to install. Installation is either magnetic or with screws.

Based on the sensor plan (see VergeSense installation location), you will already be able to identify where sensors might be installed with the magnets, and where they will need to be screwed (eg because no T-Bar or other magnetic elements are available in the ceiling in that location).

Network Requirements

When you’re installing the cellular gateway, there is no need to open any ports on your network.

When you’re installing a gateway that connects to your network, you’ll need to open ports 123, 443 and 8883 in the firewall. These ports only need an outbound connection.

We sync all our hubs to the same open NTP (network time protocol) servers so we have consistent timings in our data warehouse.

How to use below table

  • as mentioned above, ideally just the ports mentioned should be opened (outbound)

We recommend not to use specific IP addresses or DNS destinations in the firewall as they can and probably will change in the future!

  • protocol information and AL descriptions are extra

Depending on the environment main location, Spacewell Workplace tenants are created in an EU- or US-environment. Hence, for some ports to be opened, the destination address might be a different one:

  • eu: spacewell.eu1.cloud.thethings.industries

  • usa: spacewell.nam1.cloud.thethings.industries

When installing a WiFi gateway, communicate the SSID and login data (login and password) of the WiFi network. VergeSense will preconfigure the device by hard coding the details to device PRIOR to shipment.

After communication of SSID & login data to VergeSense, there should be no more changes to the WiFi network, else the gateway will not be able to connect.

  1. An active connection needs to be in place for the gateways to download the updated WiFi details; this means

    1. the new/future WiFi credentials need to be communicated to VergeSense

    2. the gateway needs to connect to the VergeSense Platform

  2. Once the updated WiFi details have been downloaded, the gateway needs to be powered down.

  3. When the gateway reboots, it will connect to the new WiFi SSID.

The change usually takes around 10 mins to update and download. VergSense can advise once the new WiFi file has been downloaded by the gateway to reduce the offline time.

Next steps

If sensor plans are provided (see VergeSense installation location), VergeSense gateway installation can happen.
