Checklist hardware on-site visit or installation

Checklist hardware on-site visit or installation

Difficulty: starter

Learning Objectives

After reading this article, you’ll be able to:

  • Make sure on-site circumstances are ideal for hardware installation

  • Know what to have at hand for a hardware installation

In preparation

Before planning an installation date, make sure a Prepare your sensor plan is created and approved by all stakeholders.

Before installing LoRa sensors, make sure the necessary LoRa Gateways, Hubs installation guides are installed and confirmed working by Spacewell - otherwise the sensor batteries will deplete themselves looking for a gateway.

If Spacewell/Installation partner performs the installation: Discuss hours on site (eg 9am-5pm) to ensure access to all areas where installation needs to be done.

On-site circumstances

  • Clean tables (rooms should be clean after refurbishment; meaning no dust particles on surfaces, since they would interfere with adhesive)

  • Working power and network are available on site

  • Working WiFi (depending on hardware, eg Meeting Room Displays, kiosks, some types of gateways, headcount sensors) is available to Spacewell Installers

  • Cables (Male cables PoE; eg for Meeting Room Displays and headcount sensors or gateways) are terminated, patched into switch ports. Switch ports are active and configured to allow required access.

  • All pulled cables are clearly marked, pulled to where each sensor is to be installed, and easily located.

  • All ceilings are accessible with a ladder

  • At the moment of installation: Access to all areas where installation needs to be done

  • Remember: Headcount sensors, kiosks, and room displays can NOT be configured on 4G

‪What tools do you need on-site?

Depending on which hardware you’ll install, you might need all or some of the below items:

General items

  • Computer/tablet with access to internet: Studio (to check health information) + support.spacewell.com (eg hub LEDs, installation instructions)

  • Tape measure (5m)

  • Screwdriver

  • Ethernet cable (if you have a computer on hand)

  • Paperclip

  • Microfibre cloth to clean surface

Gateways

Tabs sensors

  • spare batteries (1/2 AA 3.6V lithium battery)

  • A plastic badge/credit card/screw driver will allow you to open the tabs sensor (for example to check a battery) without damage

Elsys

Kiosk

  • External keyboard and mouse

Sensors that are taped (for example to glass)

  • Double sided tape & scissors

    • ‪We have good experiences with 3M VHB Tape and TENTA tape. These tapes are strong and work for all different types of sensors.

    • If you buy a roll: Per sensor you will use 3-5cm tape, and 6cm for a tabs door counter (2 parts for 1 sensor). So, you can probably hang roughly 70-100 sensors per roll (both 3M VHB Tape and TENTA tape come on 3m rolls)

    • Alternatively you can buy double sided tape pads, which removes the step of cutting off fitting pieces from a roll (for example Tenta Dubble Sided Tape Pads Extra Strong)

Press the tape in the crook of the sensor to ensure good adhesion / bigger surface area

The more tape you use, the better the adherence. From this perspective, the TENTA tape (2,5cm wide) is a bit better than the 3M WHB tape (1,9cm wide)

After installation

After hardware installation, check that the kiosk, display or other hardware is working.

For gateways and sensors, it’s a bit tricky to verify immediately if they are connecting to the Workplace IoT platform. Quality Assurance instructions might differ per sensor, so please check the dedicated installation instructions pages on Install and Configure Gateways and Sensors.
