After reading this article, you’ll be able to:
Configure indirect utilization setup with motion sensors
Configure the device to its location in the Workplace Platform
Using Browan Motion sensors can be a interesting, non-intrusive way to track (indirect) utilization.
More information on how that works and what is the difference between occupancy and utilization is available on Utilization & Occupancy Matrix
Below page describes
how to configure the location(s) for which you want to track indirect utilization and
how indirect utilization is calculated
Each SEAT (in the meeting room) needs to be a WORKPLACE
Make sure each meeting room seat corresponds to a workplace object
IWMS "Workplaces" objects to be created in/under the correct ROOM object, which in turn should be in the correct room category -> make sure room categories are correctly mapped in Studio
Make sure the capacity for meeting rooms is set correctly in Studio (ref Setting the capacity & thresholds of spaces)
Reminder: Workplace objects can only be linked to SVG floorplans in Studio
How is utilization calculated in case both a room and workplaces are linked to a motion sensor?
Indirect utilization means the sensor will send presence data, and after time slot data aggregation (see /wiki/spaces/WM/pages/492237) Workplace platform will calculate “the number of people counted in a certain area”.
Occupancy
Presence on room level is true in case presence is true for 1 or more seats OR if presence is true for the sensor linked to the room itself
So if someone walks around in the room, and the motion sensors allocated to the seats are not triggered, but the room motion sensor is triggered: presence = true.
Utilization
If presence detected on seat level AND room level: utilization/headcount will only be calculated based upon the sum of the triggered seats. It ignores the room motion sensor.
So if 2 people sit on a chair/seat and each triggers the motion sensor connected to their seat, headcount will be 2 (both when the room motion sensor is triggered, and also when it’s not)
If presence is detected ONLY on room level and not on seats, headcount is set to minimum 1
So if someone walks around in the room, and seats motion sensors are not triggered, headcount is 1
Example
Quarter 1 | Quarter 2 | Quarter 3 | |
Room PIR motion sensor | 0 | 1 | 1 |
Seat 1 PIR motion sensor | 1 | 1 | 0 |
Seat 2 PIR motion sensor | 1 | 1 | 0 |
Seat 3 PIR motion sensor | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Room occupancy live floorplan | TRUE | TRUE | TRUE |
Room utilization live floorplan (visualized by colors, not with numbers, see examples on Utilization & Occupancy Matrix ) | 2 | 2 | 1 |
Room utilization count timeslots (value used for reporting on Space monitor Dashboard) | 2 | 2 | 1 |
Remember to map each sensor to a different location!
When multiple motion sensors are linked to the same location ID: as soon as 1 sensor is capturing occupancy, the stream will state "occupied" for that location.
In other words: when all are linked to the same location, there is no differentiation or utilization calculation possible.
