Use Browan motion sensors for indirect utilization

Use Browan motion sensors for indirect utilization

Difficulty: expert

Learning Objectives

After reading this article, you’ll be able to:

  • Configure indirect utilization setup with motion sensors

  • Configure the device to its location in the Workplace Platform

Using Browan Motion sensors can be a interesting, non-intrusive way to track (indirect) utilization.

More information on how that works and what is the difference between occupancy and utilization is available on Utilization and Occupancy Matrix

Below page describes

  • how to configure the location(s) for which you want to track indirect utilization and

  • how indirect utilization is calculated

Each SEAT (in the meeting room) needs to be a WORKPLACE

  • Make sure each meeting room seat corresponds to a workplace object in IWMS and Workplace platform

  • IWMS "Workplaces" objects to be created in/under the correct ROOM object, which in turn should be in the correct room category -> make sure room categories are correctly mapped in Studio

  • Make sure the capacity for meeting rooms is set correctly in Studio (ref Setting the capacity and thresholds of spaces)

  • Reminder: Workplace objects can only be linked to SVG floorplans in Studio

  • The motion sensor is then placed under the table in front of each seat as described on Motion sensor installation at Workplaces

  • Conference room seats should not exist anymore as rooms -> should be workplaces

  • Workplaces to be created in/under the correct ROOM object, which in turn should be in the correct room category -> make sure the IWMS room categories are correctly mapped in Studio

  • Old zone config should be removed (if wanted to set up “zones”: work with Location Grouping Zones)

  • Make sure the capacity for meeting rooms is set correctly in Studio (see Setting the capacity and thresholds of spaces)

  • Workplaces can only be linked to SVG floorplans in Studio; make sure these are available for the floors that are impacted by this update

How is utilization calculated in case both a room and workplaces are linked to a motion sensor?

Indirect utilization means the sensor will send presence data, and after time slot data aggregation (see https://spacewell.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/WM/pages/492237) Workplace platform will calculate “the number of people counted in a certain area”.

Occupancy

Presence on room level is true in case presence is true for 1 or more seats OR if presence is true for the sensor linked to the room itself

So if someone walks around in the room, and the motion sensors allocated to the seats are not triggered, but the room motion sensor is triggered: presence = true.

Utilization

  • If presence detected on seat level AND room level: utilization/headcount will only be calculated based upon the sum of the triggered seats. It ignores the room motion sensor.

    • So if 2 people sit on a chair/seat and each triggers the motion sensor connected to their seat, headcount will be 2 (both when the room motion sensor is triggered, and also when it’s not)

  • If presence is detected ONLY on room level and not on seats, headcount is set to minimum 1

    • So if someone walks around in the room, and seats motion sensors are not triggered, headcount is

As mentioned on Utilization and Occupancy Matrix , there are some risks (regarding accuracy) with this setup

  • not possible to detect over-utilisation (for example a presenter or people leaning against the wall will not trigger sensors installed under the table)

  • risk of false positive/negatives is bigger

    • for example people walking around the chairs while on the phone will only trigger the room sensor, or people sitting away from the table will not trigger the sensor under the table

    • usually, meeting room “seats” locations are smaller than the ideal setup for workplaces. This means there is a bigger risk for false positives (of people triggering the neighboring sensor) than in the “Motion sensors at Workplaces” case

Remember to map each sensor to a different location!

When multiple motion sensors are linked to the same location ID: as soon as 1 sensor is capturing occupancy, the stream will state "occupied" for that location.

In other words: when all are linked to the same location, there is no differentiation or utilization calculation possible.
