Installing the Kiosk app on an ELO device

Difficulty: expert

Learning Objectives

After reading this article, you’ll be able to:

  • Perform initial configuration on ELO devices

  • Install the Kiosk App to run on ELO devices

After installing the Kiosk Hardware according to Kiosk Hardware Installation, start the device.

Booting the Kiosk for the first time

When launching the device, you are presented with 3 options in the boot menu: choose ANDROID HOME

  1. You will go through a standard Android setup wizard, (similar to a first-time setup of a new smartphone)

  2. Connect to the network during the wizard in order to get an internet connection

  3. You’ll need a Google-account in order to access the Android Playstore and install the kiosk app.

If you skip this step and don’t provide a google account, you can’t use the Playstore. You can still install the Kiosk app through the Spacewell website. However you won’t get automatic updates.

Android settings before installing the app

Configure below settings to keep the Kiosk App alive at all times, ready for end-users to use. It will also remove the possibility of them easily breaking out of the app.

1. Change the Android Display setting

Change the DPI settings of the device before using the Kiosk app. This will improve the scalability of the app

‪Go to Settings > Display Settings > Advanced > DPI settings > set to the lowest value (often 160)

2. Disable Sleep Mode

Android sleep/idle mode will kick you out of the app, so it’s better to disable these features.

  1. ‪Go to Settings > Display > Automatic idle mode: set to “Backlight off during a specific time period”

  2. Go to Settings > Display > Screen timeout: set to “never”

3. Remove 3-Button Navigation

To set up tablet-mode with gesture navigation, remove 3-button navigation. This will also limit the break-out possibilities for end-users out of the Kiosk app.

‪Go to Settings > System > Gestures> System Navigation > set to “Gesture Navigation”

4. Define Landscape or Portrait mode

In Settings > Display, select “Auto-rotate screen”. Depending on the installation angle of the screen, the Kiosk App will launch in landscape or portrait mode.

5. Enable Screen Pinning

Once you’ve downloaded the Kiosk app (see below), you can lock the Kiosk app to prevent going outside the app.

  1. ‪Go to Settings > Biometrics and security > Other security settings > Advanced > Pin windows

  2. Open the Kiosk app > open recent apps > Click on the Kiosk app Icon > Select pin this app

Every time you exit the app after this (for example after device restart or after an administrator has exited the app), you’ll have to repeat step 2 (pin the app).

Download the Kiosk app

Using the Google Playstore

Go to the Android Playstore and search for Spacewell Kiosk

Downloading from official app stores allows for automatic updates.

Using the Spacewell app store

Use the Chrome browser installed on the device to visit the Spacewell Appstore (spacewell.com)

  1. On the Kiosk page, select the Android button (image below) to download the Kiosk app on the device.

  2. Then install the app manually.

  3. When prompted, approve “unverified .apk installation”.

Install the Kiosk app

You’ll need a device account and an admin account in order to log in and install the Kiosk app.

The boot screen of the app has 1 big button “let’s get started”

Press it

You will have to provide the device account that has been configured in Users and Groups

If this is the first time you use the device account, the app will launch and give an error. Don’t panic, this is completely normal The app is asking which locations and profile to load.

You’ll need your laptop for the next few steps.

Go to Device Control and log in with an admin account.

You should see you new device in the list with a label “not configured” on the right.

When you select the device, a panel will appear from the bottom. Click on Start configuration.
